Dr. Derek Larson

Derek Larson, MD, FASN

Dr. Derek Larson was born and raised in Chicago and completed his Internal Medicine training at the University of Chicago (NorthShore). He was awarded “Resident of the Year” for three consecutive years, followed by a Chief Resident year at the same institution, in which he was granted an academic position at the University of Chicago as a clinician educator. He completed his fellowship training in Nephrology at Washington University in St. Louis.

Dr. Larson has published numerous peer-reviewed research articles and book chapters relating to chronic kidney disease, anemia, intravenous iron preparations, bone/mineral metabolism and transplant nephrology. In addition to being Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Nephrology, he is also certified as a Clinical Specialist in Hypertension by the American Society of Hypertension.  

Dr. Larson is regularly invited as a physician speaker to numerous regional and national conferences. In addition, he serves on the medical advisory board for a local charity and on the board of directors for other local non-profit organizations.  

In 2015, Dr. Larson earned the designation Fellow of the American Society of Nephrology (FASN) which honors nephrologists who have distinguished themselves through excellence in clinical practice, community outreach, research and professional achievement.

Dr. Larson has been selected yearly for the prestigious Castle Connolly Top Doctors® List since 2018 which is merit-based and peer nominated.  

His clinical interests include Hypertension, Kidney Stone Prevention, Chronic Kidney Disease, Home Dialysis, and Electrolyte Disturbances.

Dr. Larson met his wife (a native St. Louisan) in Chicago and moved to St. Louis in 2012. He has two young daughters and enjoys playing the viola, scuba diving, and traveling with his family.
